Verruca Needling

Specialist Services

What is Faulkner’s Verruca Needling?

Faulkner’s Needling is an advanced, highly effective treatment for stubborn or long-standing verrucae (plantar warts).

It works by stimulating your body’s own immune system to recognise and destroy the virus that causes verrucae — the human papillomavirus (HPV).

Unlike traditional surface treatments such as acids, freezing, or topical applications, needling targets the root cause of the infection from within, making it particularly suitable for recalcitrant verrucae that have not responded to other treatments.

What Does the Treatment Involve?

At your appointment, your podiatrist will:

  1. Examine and assess the verruca and surrounding skin to confirm suitability for the procedure.
  2. Administer a local anaesthetic to completely numb the area.
  3. Once the skin is fully anaesthetised, a fine sterile needle is used to puncture the verruca multiple times.
    • This action pushes viral particles deeper into the skin layers where immune cells are more active.
    • The process triggers a local immune response to fight the virus.
  4. A dressing is then applied, and clear aftercare instructions are provided.

The procedure typically takes around 45–60 minutes, and usually only one treatment is needed — though occasionally a follow-up may be required.

Nitric Acid Verruca Treatment

What is Nitric Acid Treatment?

Nitric acid treatment is a professional, chemical therapy used by podiatrists to treat verrucae (plantar warts).

This treatment works by chemically cauterising the infected tissue, breaking down the verruca and stimulating the body’s natural healing response.

It is a safe, controlled, and highly targeted procedure, designed to remove the infected skin without causing significant discomfort or damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

What Does the Treatment Involve?

During your appointment, your podiatrist will:

  1. Assess the lesion to confirm that it is a verruca and determine its depth and severity.
  2. Gently debride (pare down) the thickened skin over the verruca to expose the viral tissue.
  3. Apply nitric acid solution directly to the verruca using a fine, controlled applicator.
    • The acid reacts with the infected tissue, producing a mild whitening effect as it begins to work.
  4. A protective dressing is then applied to shield the area and allow the solution to continue acting over the next 24–48 hours.

Treatment sessions are typically repeated every 1–2 weeks, depending on the size, location, and response of the verruca.

Salicylic Acid Verruca Treatment

What is Salicylic Acid Treatment?

Salicylic acid treatment is a long-established and effective method for removing verrucae (plantar warts).

Salicylic acid works by softening and gradually dissolving the hard, infected skin layers that make up the verruca, allowing your body to shed the virus-infected tissue over time.

It is one of the most widely used and evidence-based treatments for verrucae, offering a safe and non-invasive option suitable for both adults and children.

During your appointment, your podiatrist will:

  1. Assess the verruca and surrounding skin to confirm the diagnosis and ensure treatment suitability.
  2. Gently debride (pare down) any thickened or hard skin over the verruca to expose the active area.
  3. Apply medical-grade salicylic acid directly to the verruca.
  4. A protective dressing is placed over the site to keep the area clean and allow the acid to work effectively between appointments.

The treatment is usually repeated weekly or fortnightly, depending on the size and response of the verruca.

In between visits, your podiatrist may also recommend at-home care using a prescribed salicylic acid preparation to enhance results.
