The Foot with Osteoarthritis

There are many possible causes of foot pain, one of which is osteoarthritis. A full history and examination is the starting point, and sometimes imaging (such as x-ray or ultrasound) or other tests (e.g. blood test) may be required.
Treatments will depend upon the specific presentation and can include:

Treatments

â€ĸ Warm footbaths
â€ĸ Hot or cold packs
â€ĸ Gentle massage and stretching
â€ĸ Dealing with any stiffness or weakness
â€ĸ Ankle, foot and toe exercises
â€ĸ Footwear (low heels, roomy toe box, correct fit, cushioned sole)
â€ĸ Lifestyle changes – daily activity, sports and workplace
â€ĸ Orthotics (insoles) and padding
â€ĸ Painkillers (e.g. paracetamol) or anti-inflammatory (e.g. Ibuprofen) tablets, creams or gels
â€ĸ Creams with menthol or capsaicin
â€ĸ Advice and foot health education
â€ĸ Referral to other health professionals

Other interventions such as steroid injections or surgery might also be considered.
