The Foot with Osteoarthritis
There are many possible causes of foot pain, one of which is osteoarthritis. A full history and examination is the starting point, and sometimes imaging (such as x-ray or ultrasound) or other tests (e.g. blood test) may be required.
Treatments will depend upon the specific presentation and can include:

âĸ Footwear (low heels, roomy toe box, correct fit, cushioned sole)
âĸ Lifestyle changes â daily activity, sports and workplace
âĸ Orthotics (insoles) and padding
âĸ Painkillers (e.g. paracetamol) or anti-inflammatory (e.g. Ibuprofen) tablets, creams or gels
âĸ Creams with menthol or capsaicin
âĸ Advice and foot health education
âĸ Referral to other health professionals
Other interventions such as steroid injections or surgery might also be considered.
